OUR STORY

The idea for a Historical Village was first tossed around at a meeting of the Miles & District Historical Society in the late 1960s, and came into being with the donation of an old community hall from a nearby locality. The hall was carefully relocated to it’s current position in Miles and filled with authentic collections of local history and artefacts, including a 500 year old bible! It’s one of the first buildings you will walk through when you enter the museum.

HISTORY BEHIND THE VILLAGE

A number of other buildings were added, authentic structures that had been salvaged from local properties and genuine replicas hand built by volunteers, and in 1971 the Miles Historical Village Museum was ready to welcome the public. New buildings and exhibits were added every year up to the late 1990s, and the Village is now recognised as one of the best historical museums in Australia.

The grounds are home to 34 buildings of which 15 are genuine original structures, 10 are replicas and 9 are purpose built. Together they form a pioneer settlement with a village streetscape that gives you an insight to the workings of an early Queensland rural town. And staying true to its humble beginnings, the Village remains a not-for-profit organisation led by a team of incredible volunteers.

HOW TO SUPPORT US

xArtboard 1

Many donors have generously given their heirlooms and special items to the Village for safe-keeping and preservation. It’s basically how we came into being! We welcome the opportunity to discuss any items of historical significance that you may wish to share.

We also welcome donations of the financial kind. Contributions of all sizes play a vital role in supporting the longevity of the museum and the significant work we do in preserving our history for future generations. If you wish to make a donation over the phone or in person, please call us on (07) 4627 1492. Gifts of $2 or more are tax deductible.
